This is a neoprene mask in the style of the Italian Comedy, Commedia Dell' Arte.

The Captain is a braggart who is really a coward at heart. He goes on and on about is valor in battle, but run at the site of a mouse. He therefore cannot be punished enough, by the other characters. He usually carries a sword that ends up acting as a phallic symbol when ladies are present.
